Simone Roig y Collado has been practising karate for more than twenty years. She was awarded her (5th Dan) in 2019 after completing her Dan examination under Hitoshi Kasuya Sensei (9th Dan) in Tokyo, Japan. Simone has been teaching karate since 2001 and has had the role of dojo instructor at numerous karate schools in the Pretoria area for the past eighteen years.

During December 2019, she had the privilege of travelling to Ōita City, Japan, for a period of ten days to undertake the private renshusei training programme conducted by Andre Bertel Sensei (7th Dan). Daily training consisted of a minimum of four hours of private training at various dojos within the area. Often, this training was supplemented with additional outside training at a nearby temple or shrine.

She is a true lover of the art and is passionate about teaching and uplifting the community through the ideals taught in karate-do. In 2015, she placed 2nd in the Senior Ladies Open U53kg Kumite division in the WSKF World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

Teaching Focus

Kata is taught in stages.

Kumite can be used to develop a particular technique.

Refers to the basic techniques that are taught.

As a sports discipline, traditional karate uses the tournament as one of training means.

Once a kata has been learned, it must be practised repeatedly until it can be applied in an emergency, for knowledge of just the sequence of a form in Karate is useless.
Karate aims to build character, improve human behaviour, and cultivate modesty; it does not, however, guarantee it.
Kata is not fixed or immoveable. Like water, it’s ever-changing and fits itself to the shape of the vessel containing it. However, kata is not some kind of beautiful competitive dance, but a grand martial art of self-defence – which determines life and death.
