Power Peace Purpose …What does these 3 words mean to you?
To the seriously ill kids who are part of Kids Kicking Cancer’s Heroes Circle these three words are a symbol and a sense of their own Power that they can harness to regain a sense of control over the chaos of their lives and their illness and the power to push away the messages of pain, fear, and anger that they experience during their sickness. They fill themselves with a deep sense of inner Peace that assist them to heal and to rest and relax during this period.
These kids know that each of them has a life Purpose that gives them and others hope, as they are empowered to teach others how to use the power of light to break through the darkness of pain, fear and anger. They use their purpose to teach the world, adults and kids alike to take control of their lives and everything in it by providing inspiration and light to others facing life challenges. They teach us all how to be powerful martial artists and most of all how to be victors and not victims. Our little heroes become empowered partners in their own healing by learning martial arts mind-body techniques to help them heal physically, spiritually and emotionally.
A few of the Kime Karate Black and Brown belts decided to become volunteers to this program under the instruction of Sensei Moses Sebopa and went through a very detailed and special training course to train very sick children karate in hospitals and empower these children to feel a sense of control over their illness. The program is an evidence-based innovative program that merges modern integrative medicine with traditional martial arts, that addresses the overwhelming needs of children with illness. The program teach traditional karate moves along with the mind-body techniques of meditation, breathing, relaxation, and visualization to dramatically lower pain levels.
Every weekend a group of 3-4 of us visit one of the hospitals in Gauteng at the Oncology unit to do either one-on-one sessions or group sessions with these very ill kids, we started at Steve Biko in Pretoria and will soon go to the other hospitals too like Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto and some others.
What an absolute humbling experience to see the kids’ eyes light up when they see us visiting them, to experience their own Power, Peace and Purpose and sometimes to do a bit of punching or kicking or sometimes just to sit and talk or colour-in with them when they don’t feel well enough for physical activities.
The Heroes Circle program is open to all children from age 3 to teens facing the pain and discomfort of any illness as well as to their siblings and parents who supports them through the sickness. Kids Kicking Cancer’s Mission is to ease the pain of very sick children while empowering them to heal physically, spiritually and emotionally.
